Why Fiber Is Your Secret Weapon for a Flat, Happy Belly—and a Healthier, More Vibrant YOU
BrandCraftYOU | Published July 2026
Let's talk about something that doesn't get nearly enough airtime in the wellness conversation.
It's not protein—everyone's STILL talking about protein. Not healthy fats—they are no longer vilified and finally got their vindication with the paradigm shift to embrace healthy fats and understanding that the quality and type of fat matter most. And not my beloved carbs—still the most controversial macro at any dinner table (though, please—we know carbs have a prime place in a healthy diet and all carbs are not created equal—that's for another blog soon).
Fiber. We're talking about fiber. And if you've never given it much thought beyond the occasional mention of "digestive health," keep reading—because what fiber valiantly does for your body, your belly, and your overall vitality is nothing short of remarkable.

Feel Good. Look Good. Thank Your Fiber.
Where's fiber in today's healthy eating conversation? More educational and esoteric and, well, almost negatively geriatric. Let's flip that conversation!
What's not talked about plainly enough? A well-nourished gut and a properly functioning digestive system don't just feel better—they look better. At ANY age. We're talking about less bloating, less puffiness, less of that uncomfortable "why does nothing fit right today" feeling that impacts how you feel—and look—from the outside, though it has everything to do with what's happening inside your body.
For my clients—high-performers who work hard, live fully, and want to feel their absolute best to show up powerfully always—this is the insight that shifts their overall dynamic. Because Feel Good = Look Good isn't just a Chris-ism. It's representative of fiber doing its job.
This is your secret weapon in your healthy lifestyle toolkit for a flat, happy, confident belly this summer. And it truly starts on your plate. (You know what they say—abs are made in the kitchen, not in the gym! And who doesn't want lean abs.)
Fiber's Hero Role Supporting YOU—It's So Much More Than "Regularity"
Fiber is technically a carbohydrate—but it functions completely differently from other carbs. It's not absorbed the same way, doesn't spike blood sugar the same way, and doesn't behave anything like the refined carbs that give the whole category a bad reputation.
Here's what fiber actually does for you—and why it's one of the ultimate "Good Guys" in your nutrition lineup:
Feeds Your Gut Microbiome. The trillions of beneficial bacteria that influence everything from immunity to mood to metabolism. Love your gut!
Slows Glucose Absorption. It helps regulate blood sugar and reduce energy crashes.
Reduces Inflammation. A huge benefit particularly given chronically elevated inflammation is at the root of most lifestyle diseases.
Supports Hormonal Balance. Your gut plays a surprisingly powerful role in estrogen metabolism—fiber helps regulate and balance your hormones in ways most people never connect to their plate.
Supports Weight Balance. Fiber helps keep you feeling genuinely satiated vs. deprived.
Helps Manage and Prevent Chronic Disease. A fiber-rich diet is consistently associated with lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.
Supports Immune Health. Roughly 70% of your immune system lives in your gut; feed it well!
Reduces Bloating and Belly Puffiness. A well-functioning digestive system leads to a flatter, more comfortable, more confident you—internally and to the eye!
Bottom line: fiber is one of the most underrated-yet-powerful tools in your Aging Powerfully℠ toolkit—and one of the simplest ways to ensure you're not just living longer, but living better.
A startling stat? An estimated 90%+ of Americans don't hit their daily recommended fiber intake of 28-34 grams. The average American gets only about half that. Half. Given everything fiber does for your health, your energy, and yes—your belly—that's definitely a gap worth closing, slowly but surely.
Meet the Bowl—Getting In Those Fiber Reps!

Here's to a gorgeous way of getting in those fiber reps! This is my poolside morning bowl—one of my fiber-rich go-to meals that comes together easily given my focus on real, mostly whole, mostly unprocessed foods. (See My "Healthy Eating—Happy YOU!" Power Principle 1: EAT REAL FOOD.) This bowl alone delivers approximately 17 grams of fiber—that's already half or more of what most Americans get in an entire day, in one single meal.
Let me walk you through why every ingredient earns its place:
GF Organic Steel Cut Oats. Less processed than rolled oats, lower glycemic index, higher fiber density. I enjoy this bowl regularly—it's one of my favorite ways to start the day when I'm in the mood for something warm and seriously satisfying.
Hemp Hearts. The quiet overachiever. Fiber plus omega-3 fatty acids plus plant protein in one tiny, delicious seed. Sprinkle them on everything.
Chia Seeds. Among the highest fiber foods on the planet. They absorb liquid and form a gel that slows digestion beautifully, keeping you full and your blood sugar steady. Also delivering omega-3s and plant protein.
A quick note worth knowing: fiber comes in two forms—soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber (like in oats and chia) dissolves in water and forms a gel, slowing digestion and feeding beneficial gut bacteria. Insoluble fiber (like in whole grains and vegetables) moves through the digestive tract largely intact—which is actually a benefit for those sensitive to certain compounds like oxalates (myself included!), as insoluble fiber helps carry them through rather than allowing absorption. Both types matter. Eating a variety of fiber-rich foods gives you both.
Skyr. Icelandic-style high-protein yogurt with probiotic power. Your gut microbiome will thank you.
Ceylon Cinnamon. Not just a flavor note. Ceylon cinnamon (not the more common Cassia variety—they are NOT the same!) supports blood sugar regulation and delivers meaningful anti-inflammatory benefits. It matters which one you use.
Fresh Nectarine Slices. Vitamin C, natural sweetness, and yes—more fiber. Summer fruit that genuinely earns its place.
The total picture? Nearly 50 grams of protein AND extraordinary fiber—in one beautiful, nutritious, and delicious bowl that feels genuinely indulgent. That is the No Deprivation Zone™ in its most delicious form.
Fiber at Your Summer Table
Here's what I love most about a fiber-rich approach to eating in summer: it doesn't mean heavy, dense, or boring. Look at this gorgeous mango-avocado salad—created by my daughter-in-law Maria and son Matt, and officially one of my new favorite things on earth.

Ripe mangoes. Creamy avocados. Fresh lime juice. Cilantro. That's it—and it's a fiber powerhouse not to mention the most refreshing, colorful thing on your July 4th table that will have your taste buds doing their happy dance… and your belly joining in. Avocado alone is one of the highest-fiber fruits you can eat (yes, it's a fruit!), delivering about 10 grams per avocado alongside those legendary healthy fats.
And then there's the humble potato—specifically with its skin on, as in both of my July 4th potato salads.

The potato gets an unfair reputation. A medium potato with skin delivers about 4 grams of fiber plus meaningful potassium—and when you build your potato salad with quality ingredients and a smart dressing, it belongs proudly on any No Deprivation Zone™ table.
Fiber is everywhere in a well-built summer spread. You just have to know where to look—and then look for it intentionally.
My Top 3 Watch List for Nutrition Labels
When I'm educating clients on navigating food labels to make better, healthier choices, here's the fiber-inclusive framework I come back to again and again. Because while quality, real, whole, unprocessed food is always the gold standard—there are plenty of occasions throughout the week where we're choosing from the best available packaged options. Here's how to own those choices:
1. Optimize Fiber. More is More.Between two comparable products, always choose the one with more fiber. Always. Given that 90%+ of Americans fall short of their daily fiber needs, every gram is an opportunity—and it adds up faster than you think.
2. Avoid Added Sugar. Aim for ZERO.Added sugar is hiding everywhere, and we Americans get far too much of it. I encourage my clients to aim for zero added sugar as their goal—not the AHA's 25g guideline, which I consider too permissive. Read every label. Be the detective your health deserves. Own. YOUR. Health.
3. Fewest, Easiest to Understand Ingredients. If you can't pronounce it or wouldn't find it in a real kitchen, that's information. The shorter and cleaner the ingredient list, the closer you are to real food. And real food is always the goal.
There's plenty more to watch for—including zero trans fats, always—but mastering these three is a powerful, life-changing start. 🚀
This three-point check takes about fifteen seconds and will powerfully transform the quality of everything coming into your home.
Your Fiber Prescription—Go Slow and Steady!
One thing to be mindful of as you start amping up those fiber reps: go slow and steady. Dramatically increasing fiber too quickly—without simultaneously increasing your water intake—can cause bloating and digestive discomfort. That is the opposite of what we're going for!
The goal is a gradual, consistent increase that your gut microbiome can adapt to happily. Vision how you wish to feel, make small changes as you ramp up to your goal intake, then wait for the "I feel better!" magic to happen.
PRO TIP: Your Fiber Prescription!
Add one fiber-rich element to every meal this week—and drink an extra glass of water alongside it. Some delicious options:
Chia seeds or hemp hearts stirred into morning yogurt or oatmeal
A generous handful of leafy greens added to any meal
Whole fruit instead of juice—always
Legumes (lentils, chickpeas, black beans) in grain bowls, salads, or soups
Potatoes or sweet potatoes with their skin on
A sliced avocado alongside—well, anything
Start with one. Feel the difference. Then add another.
Think Big. Start Small. Feel Better.℠
