The Art of the Healthy Pause—and Why It Might Be the Most Powerful Thing You Do All Summer
July 2026 | BrandCraftYOU

July has a different energy. Not the anticipatory, school's out excitement of June, and not yet the back-to-business, back-to-school, back-to-traffic reality of August. July is the intentional exhale—more languid, more spacious, somehow quieter-yet-still-summer-vibrant.
And if you're a high-performer who NEVER fully stops? I see you—I AM you. This month is your proverbial permission slip, your hall pass to take it down a notch and really connect with what matters. Including YOU.
Because what I've come to understand in this beautiful life—and what I want every high-achiever reading this to hear: the healthiest, happiest version of you doesn't optimize how they feel solely through action. She—or he—also rests. Connects. Savors. And does all of it without guilt, without negotiating, and without a single apology. (Not easy for us “Type AAAs”!)
That's the art of the healthy pause. And July is its season.
REST: The Strategy Your Body Has Been Waiting For

Let's address the thing most high-performers resist hearing: rest is not a reward for finished work. Rest IS the work. Your body repairs, consolidates, and strengthens during recovery—not during effort. Skip the recovery and you don't just feel worse; you perform worse, lead worse, and show up as less than your best self in every area of your life.
July is the natural invitation to practice this. The pace slows just enough—if you let it. The days are still long and gorgeous. The energy is celebratory but not frantic. This is your window.
What does rest actually look like for a high-performer who doesn't know how to stop? It doesn't have to be a week on a beach (though if that's available to you, YES). It can be:
The short morning grounding and breathing practice that ends legs up the lounge chair instead of immediately reaching for the phone
The evening walk that isn't a workout—just movement for the joy of it
The meal you actually taste because you're not simultaneously answering emails
The weekend afternoon with absolutely, unapologetically nothing scheduled
While I always say, “Any. Movement. Counts.”℠, REST counts too. And the body keeps score either way.
CONNECT: Community Is Medicine
Here's a startling stat worth sitting with: loneliness has the same health impact as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Fifteen. And yet in our high-performing, always-on world, genuine human connection is often the first thing sacrificed when life gets busy.
July’s unique mid-summer magic offers the opportunity to push back on that. In the best, most fun, relationship-building way!
A recent World Happiness Report study—covered in Inc. Magazine just days ago—found that people who share even one meal a week with others are measurably happier than those who don't. And the more meals shared, the greater the benefit. "Sharing meals proves to be an exceptionally strong indicator of subjective wellbeing—on par with income and unemployment," the researchers noted.
Think about that. One shared meal a week. That's the Key Biscayne July 4th parade followed by a backyard BBQ. That's the neighbor you finally have over for dinner. That's the family table that overflows with food, fun, and the kind of connection that quite literally makes you healthier.
Relationships and community are what I call the 5th Modifiable Lifestyle Factor—sitting alongside sleep and relaxation, exercise and movement, nutrition (the “Big Kahuna”!), and stress management and building resiliency as a genuine pillar of your healthiest, happiest life. July is the season to lean into it with everything you've got.
SAVOR: The Art of the Unhurried Meal

My "Healthy Eating—Happy YOU!" Power Principle 9 is Mindful Eating—and July offers its highest expression.
Savoring isn't a diet tactic. It's not about eating slowly to eat less. It's about being genuinely present with your food, your table, and the people around it. It's the BBQ spread that you actually taste. The occasional, celebratory crumble that you eat warm, with good vanilla ice cream, without a single thought about whether you "should” (because you’ve used the best quality, “No Deprivation Zone” ingredients and consistently eat your “Good Guys”!). The mango-avocado salad that makes your taste buds do their happy dance from the very first bite.
That presence—that full, unhurried, joyful engagement with a meal—is lifestyle medicine. It supports digestion, reduces stress hormones, and signals your nervous system that you are safe, nourished, and exactly where you need to be.
No Deprivation Zone™. No guilt. No negotiating health OR joy. Just presence, pleasure, and the beautiful nourishment of food enjoyed with people you love.
TRAVEL SMART: Your Health Doesn't Take a Vacation

If July means travel for you—flights, road trips, family visits—here's my personal system for keeping your healthy lifestyle intact without becoming the person who packs a cooler for every occasion (though honestly, sometimes I am that person and I'm not sorry!).
My non-negotiables when traveling:
Fruit, veggies, nuts, and seeds in my purse—or whatever easy, portable left over is healthy and handy. Airport food is a minefield. Your own snacks are your superpower. Remember to combo your PFCs (proteins, fats, carbs) to optimize satiety and energy—because Power Principle 3. COMBOS MATTER.
Leftovers in the car. Road trips don't have to mean fast food. A little Home Food Operations planning before you leave makes all the difference.
Hydration at altitude. Flying is dehydrating in ways most people underestimate. Water, not wine, is your best travel companion at 35,000 feet. (Save the wine for when you land!) And ensure you add your electrolytes for an extra boost!
Movement wherever you are. Walk the hotel stairs. Swim. Explore on foot. Any. Movement. Counts.℠—vacation is not a vacation from movement, it's just a different, fun, creative, exploratory expression of the same healthy lifestyle values connected with YOU.
The goal isn't perfection. It's consistency with intention. Think Big. Start Small. Feel Better.℠
Your Mid-Summer Magic Prescription
Here's what I want to inspire you to consider this July—and it’s simple, specific, and completely doable:
REST. Identify one thing you can protect this week. One evening. One morning. One hour. Guard it like the health investment it is.
CONNECT. Share one meal this week with someone you love. Just one. The research says it matters. Your heart already knows it does.
SAVOR. Eat one meal this week without your phone, sitting down, honoring the pause. And mindfully taste it. Actually taste it.
TRAVEL SMART. If you're going somewhere this summer, pack your snacks. Future you will be grateful.
That's the art of the healthy pause. That's mid-summer magic. And that—REST, CONNECT, SAVOR, TRAVEL SMART—helps support the healthiest, happiest version of YOU.
Think Big. Start Small. Feel Better.℠
